Orwig Family Corner Cupboard, Dated 1861
-
Description
The date of this corner cupboard, coupled with the stepped form and extraordinary paint decoration makes it an important example of the skills of the local craftsmen in the area of Hopewell Township in York County, Pennsylvania where the Orwig family farm was located. The cupboard also reflects the tenacious conservatism of Germanic culture in in southeastern Pennsylvania during the 19th century kept alive by the waves of German immigration beginning in 1840s. This cupboard celebrates the marriage of Jacob and Elizabeth Orwig and is inscribed "March 1, 1861." A full family genealogy is available. Requires a 31" corner.
