Model "741157-1" Floor Lamp for ASEA, Sweden First half of the 20th Century

  • Description
ASEA produced models are pieces of Swedish lighting history. ASEA (before 1977 Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget), was a Swedish electrotechnical company headquartered in Västerås. It was founded in 1883 and was, until 1987, the city's largest industrial company. The historic company has had a decisive impact on how the Swedish electrotechnical industry has developed, but also on design history. Some models, like the “Viktoria”, are preserved in museums, and their technical prowess can be also observed in their other pieces - such as this “741157-1” floor lamp.

This innovative floor lamp model seamlessly blends tradition with modernity, reflecting the era's design ethos. The lamp's foundation lies in a robust cast iron base, ensuring stability and durability. Its black lacquered sheet metal body, adorned with yellow metal and brass details in the articulated upper part, exudes sophistication. The amalgamation of materials creates a harmonious contrast, epitomising the 20th century design principles that sought to marry functionality with form and - most importantly - elegance. The most peculiar element of the design is the so-called gooseneck, a semi-rigid, flexible joining element made from a coiled metal hose that holds the fabric shade. Similar to its natural counterpart, it can be bent in almost any direction and remain in that position; in this case, this innovative element allows the light to be focused in any direction. The flexibility of the neck adds a touch of practicality to the lamp's overall aesthetic, making it a versatile piece. The shade, with its cylindrical shape, renders this model truly timeless, alongside the sleek and contemporary body which propels the lamp into the modern age. Swedish designers were not afraid to experiment during the 20th century with new materials, while also paying homage to traditional craftsmanship.

ASEA has a rich heritage rooted in lighting innovation, pushing boundaries and redefining norms, playing a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of Swedish lighting design during the 20th century. Their commitment to quality craftsmanship and avant-garde design principles set them apart as pioneers in the industry.
