  • Description
The Swedish company, Asea, has been around since the early 1900s. They are known for producing high-quality lighting fixtures for residential and commercial spaces. Asea often collaborated with leading architects and designers such as Lisa Johansson-Pape and Sven Aage Holm Sorensen to ensure cutting edge and highly coveted lighting solutions. Featuring a minimalist and functional design, distinctive details, and high-quality material, this table lamp is a rare find from the company’s archives.

The simple but effective design is in service of functionality and the Swedish idea of “good design”. Like most Swedish light fixtures of the era, the design assumes a more minimalist look that relies on its materials and illuminates the space with direct light from the lightbulb. The brass structure is quite traditional with a circular base a straight tube, and finally, the glass shade. However, each element has a distinctive feature to it that makes the design interesting from every aspect. The base is quite thick that secures the visual balance of the lamp, while the tube is wrapped in beautiful brown leather. Finally, the shade has a peculiar shape that that can be spotted on a number of Asea produced models from the mid-century era. The shape recalls Henning Koppel’s petronella oil lamp and when turned on, the warm light brightens up the opal glass creating a warm, cosy impression. The joinery is also notable for its seamlessness. The brass pegs hold the shade effortlessly, poking out of the holes as decorative elements. The design is very successful in mixing the traditional and modern elements while staying true to the guiding principles of Swedish modernism.

Asea AB, founded in 1883, was a Swedish electrotechnical company headquartered in Västerås. The historic company not only produced high-quality lighting such as this table lamp model, but has had a decisive influence on how the Swedish electrotechnical industry has developed as well. Table lamps, such as this Swedish model have an important role to create an ambience that is cosy and stylish while not compromising on quality and functionality.
