Description
Very large antique Baccarat overlay glass chandelier
French, Late 19th Century
Height 255cm, diameter 167cm
This exceptional Baccarat chandelier was crafted in the late 19th century and exemplifies the fine artistry for which the company has been renowned since its founding in 1764.
Over the years, Baccarat's creations became highly coveted by European aristocracy, earning prestigious awards at international exhibitions.
The chandelier features a grand central stem, made of bulbous glass elements with gilded quatrefoil cuts that reveal vibrant green and red hues beneath the white overlay. The stem is adorned with delicate pendants, culminating in an exquisite design that showcases Baccarat’s signature craftsmanship.
Around the stem, scrolled and twisted glass arms extend outward, each terminating in a white and green overlay bobeche, set with shimmering glass pendants. The arms support tulip-shaped red glass candlecups, gilded in gold, that hold candle-like bulb supports. Between the arms, bell-shaped green and white pendants with gilt detailing add further elegance.
Crowning the chandelier is a ring of star-shaped glass finials, followed by a band of floral glass designs with hanging beads and droplets, offering a sophisticated contrast to the opulent lower sections. This eye-catching arrangement leads to the central section, the true focal point of the chandelier.
In the 19th century, Baccarat capitalised on the rising demand for European glass in Asia, designing several bespoke chandeliers for clients in the region, including Jayajirao Scindia, the Maharaja of Gwalior (1835-1886). The polychrome accents in this chandelier suggest it was crafted specifically for the Indian market.
With its intricate glasswork, rich history, and remarkable craftsmanship, this Baccarat chandelier is a spectacular addition to any refined interior.
