Danish Brass Torch Wall Sconces, Denmark ca 1960s

  • Description
Danish designer, Poul Henningsen once discussed how Le Corbusier and Bauhaus aesthetically went too far and turned steel tubes, flat roofs and glass walls into an exaggerated demonstration of a new idiom beyond functional justification. As these wall lamps show, the Danish idea of functionality in design went hand in hand with an aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Most of the stunning minimalist designs from the turn of the century to the 1960s, termed "mid-century", captured the imagination of the world, especially the work of Danish architect-designers, who set the high bars for design. The sconce is a wall-mounted lighting fixture, traditionally used to hold candles or torches. This pair of sconces additionally have a structure that resembles a torch, with longer lower halves and beautiful opal glass shades on the tops. The 1960s were defined by leading Danish designers’ sleek and innovative modernist designs that became the trademark style in Danish modern lighting. The simple design of these lamps is clean with a straightforwardly modern look. Combining the brass bases and backplates with the milky cylindrical glass shades, this pair is brilliant in its simplicity. The prowess of the designer becomes evident as these wall lamps stand as statement pieces despite their minimalism. Since the two materials - brass and opal glass - dictate the look, much attention was paid to their quality and to the craftsmanship that united them into the cylindrical shape. While opal glass has been around since the 16th century, mid-century designers used the material in combination with brass to create a timelessly modern look.

The design has great proportions, and when lit, these lamps create an exceptionally atmospheric light, giving the brass a vivid colour as well. Sconces are a timeless type of lighting fixtures that can easily elevate their surroundings. These fixtures never go out of style, and have been in use for centuries for a good reason.
