Description
Empire period French gilt bronze six light chandelier
French, c. 1810
Height 80cm, diameter 45cm
Made in France around 1810, at the time when the Empire style was in vogue, the chandelier’s design encapsulates many of the features characterising this style.
An angel with arms raised holding a ball graces the centre of the chandelier. Surrounding it are geometric chains. Six swan-shaped arms surround the central figure, their necks extending to hold the elegant drip pans. Each one is fitted with candles and an ormolu pinecone finial hangs from the bottom. A larger pinecone finial with floral and foliate motifs hangs from the base of the chandelier. Surmounting the chandelier are six feather-shaped mounts.
Of an elegant and refined design encapsulating the Empire style, the chandelier would be a magnificent addition to smaller-sized interiors. -
