A rare pair of table lamps in lacquered metal and aluminum, design by Gino Sarfatti, model 585, produced by Arteluce, Italy, 1958
The name Arteluce immediately brings to mind Gino Sarfatti. Remembered as both a sharp-witted entrepreneur and a designer of refined taste, he built Arteluce into a leading manufacturer of lighting fixtures, attracting some of the most important designers of the 20th century. His personal history was deeply affected by the upheavals of World War II, during which he faced ostracization, yet his brand—initially named Lumen—gained widespread acclaim in the early 1950s.
Sarfatti personally designed nearly six hundred lamps, including this pair, which appears in the 1958 catalog as model 585. The simplicity of its lines and the essential nature of its forms not only reflect a precise design philosophy but also make this pair of adjustable lamps highly versatile, seamlessly fitting into a variety of interiors.
