Hans-Agne Jakobsson Brass and Red Glass Dome Light for AB Markaryd, Sweden 1960s

  • Description
This rare dome pendant light is a stunning example of Swedish modern design. Hans-Agne Jakobsson was a prominent designer and lighting manufacturer who played a crucial role in shaping the aesthetic of Swedish design during the mid- and even later part of the 20th century, creating dozens of designs for his own company.

The design of this lamp has a true retro feel to it thanks to its unusually vivid colour and shape. While the glass shade for the most part has the classic dome shape, the lower part is retracted, creating interesting layers. This “withdrawn” look makes this model so unique, even in Jakobsson’s own repertoire of creative models. The obscure glass lets light through without being transparent, while the lower part directs the light down through the hole, providing ample light, both functional and ambient. Furthermore, the inner side of the glass is white to better reflect it and to provide contrast. The brass canopy and straight rod also provide great contrast to the red glass and to its curved shape. This pendant offers plenty even when switched off; the bright glass together with the patinated brass create a contrast that is fundamentally modern in its appearance. Hans-Agne Jakobsson was one of the most important designers of the Swedish modern movement. He was known for his innovative use of materials and forms. His designs stand out for their quality just as much as their visual attributes. Like most of his designs, this model was made at his own manufactory in Markaryd, Sweden.

From the distinctive red glass to the never-before-seen shape, this pendant dome light is a testament to the enduring appeal of Swedish modern design and to Hans-Agne Jakobsson's lasting legacy as one of the movement's most significant designers.

    About the Designer:
Born in 1919 in Gotland, Sweden, Hans Agne Jakobsson is one of the most well-known Swedish lighting designers. He did his carpenter apprenticeship before studying architecture in Gothenburg.

First working as an industrial designer for General Motors, he later founded his own company after being an assistant to the designers Carl Malmsten and Werner West. In 1950, due to Christmas, he added a model of hanging lamps in small strips of pine in one of his stores to soften the lively lighting of the shop window. The people who were passing by were immediately seduced by this hanging lamp, which started it all. He established his own company in 1951: Hans Agne Jakobsson AB and began producing this model in his factories and achieved success abroad as well. In 50 years, he designed more than 2000 lamps with unique designs.

He used materials and experimented with multiple techniques, for example using fabrics with fringes, blown glass of colour and smoked glass. His great diversity resulted in a wide range of timeless lighting models. These pieces continue to seduce design lovers, as they adapt themselves to any interior, without blending into the background.

Today, Jakobsson’s works can be found in private homes as well as public institutions throughout Sweden. The designer passed away in 2009 in Sweden, leaving behind a great legacy. ~H.
