Holger Johansson Ceiling Lamps for Westal, Bankeryd, Sweden 1960s
-
Description
Swedish master of lighting design, Holger Johansson brought much glamour into the Swedish mid-century modernism. Without giving up the “form follows function” ideal of the era, he created spectacular models like these ceiling lights with a grandiose effect.
These marvellous chandeliers have brass frames with 9 smoked, translucent glass shades each. The shades resemble pressed spheres and hang from brass poles that are arranged on two levels, three on the top level and six on the lower one. Thanks to this structure, the lamps appear quite voluminous, especially when the light is switched on. The light coming from the smoked glass shades brighten the yellow brass beautifully. This fullness is further accentuated by the long straight brass poles holding the bodies. From below, the chandelier reveals its geometric shape that resembles a flower. This pair has all the characteristics Johansson was famous for: it is elegant and stylish where the design allows it to be big and shiny, yet it never becomes tacky. Johansson’s present design used to decorate the ceiling of the Filadelfiakyrkan (“Philadelphia Church”) in Malmö, designed by architects Carl-Axel Stoltz and Birger Linderoth in 1935.
These ceiling lamps were manufactured by the Swedish company Westal in Bankeryd. The historical company was founded in 1947 and for more than seven decades, it has developed functional and aesthetically pleasing luminaires.
