The California lamp was designed by the Danish architects and designers Vilhelm Wohlert, Jørgen Bo, and Poul Henningsen in the 1950s for Louis Poulsen, a Danish lighting manufacturer. The lamp was designed for use in the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, which was also designed by Lauritzen and completed in 1960. In the 1950s, Lauritzen and his team were commissioned to design a series of lamps for the hotel's guest rooms, restaurants, and public spaces. Bo and Wohlert were responsible for designing the California lamp, which was intended for use in the hotel's public spaces, including the lobby and dining areas.
