Lisa-Johansson Pape Beehive and Flowers Ceiling Lamp, Orno / Karhula 1940s
-
Description
Lisa Johansson-Pape Art Deco ceiling pendant with beehive opaline glass shades and pressed glass flower decorations. The three arm pendant is of patinated dark brass. The lamp shades are mouth blown in beehive shaped wooden moulds at the legendary Karhula glass factory that made the first Alvar Aalto iconic Savoy vases. One of the shades still carries remnants of the Karhula sticker. Coincidentally the same shade has a minor hardly detectable manufacturing 'defect' and a minor, less than 1 cm, chip to the upper edge (please see photos)
The pendant is an absolute beauty in its original good condition. It represents the early era of Lisa Johansson-Pape's designs when she first started at Orno in 1939 and early 1940s.
Lisa Johansson-Pape (1907-1989) was a Finnish designer best known for her works in lightings. She paid more attention to the function of the lamp firstly, then the design feature secondly. Lisa designed furniture for Stockmann for a number of years, after which she turned her attention to lamps, also at the Stockmann owned company Orno Oy. She won a number of medals for her lighting designs in the Milan Triennials in the 1950s. -
