Absolutely exquisite design by the legendary lighting dynamo, Lisa Johansson-Pape. An opal glass shade is surrounded by a brass frame adorned with 35 individual prismatic flowers that reflect the light in such a wonderful way. Such a rare and beautiful pendant lamp! No. 1304, Stockmann-Orno 1951.

Lisa-Johansson-Pape (b. 1907 d. 1989): "I have a background in furniture design, but necessity forced me to venture into lamp design during the war," she explained. Her unique style reflects a delicate equilibrium between sleek aesthetics and a commitment to practicality and utility. Johansson-Pape, a versatile engineer and designer, carved out spaces for women across various industries. She engaged in numerous prominent collaborations, notably with the glassblowers of Iittala during the 1950s, where she conceived acclaimed lighting fixtures for public venues like the Helsinki Children’s Hospital. Additionally, she contributed to installations in 150 churches, including the renowned Eckerö Church in Finland.

In 1951, Johansson-Pape earned the silver medal at the Triennale di Milano, followed by the gold medal in 1954 for her design of the Sipuli, or Onion lamp. This marked the inception of a lifetime of recognition and awards. Her accolades include the Pro-Finlandia prize in 1957 for the design of the Laura pendant lamp, alongside other iconic lighting creations such as the Belle pendant lamp and the Senator floor lamp. Her work, often integrating acrylic and enameled brass with glass components, gained .
exposure at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York and the widely traveled “Design In Scandinavia” exhibition throughout the United States and Canada in the 1950s.

Lisa Johansson-Pape emerged as an inspiring trailblazer in design, fueled by her dedication to traditional Finnish design and her efforts to establish a community and platform for female designers and architects. Her involvement with Friends of Finnish Handicraft, where she designed textiles, supported various national movements in textile design, and she served as the organization’s Artistic Director for over three decades. Additionally, she made significant contributions as a respected public speaker and author, sharing her expertise on furniture design, lighting, and Scandinavian modernism.
