Pair of Acrylic Glass Wall Sconces by Maison Lunel, France 1950s

  • Description
This pair of double sconce wall lights from Maison Lunel are imposing models of an era that saw the creation of some of the most famous lighting designs ever created. From the unique design and materials to the innovative techniques, these sconces offer plenty.

Maison Lunel was a lighting manufacturer traditionally associated with the modern movement for its creations close to those of the first French designers. The French company popularized the use of lacquered tubular metal and brass in the creation of lighting fixtures. Many of the pieces produced by Maison Lunel borrow the same formal, sober and refined design vocabulary, which makes them highly sought after by collectors and design aficionados alike. These wall sconces combine three main materials to create a stunning effect, mainly an innovative acrylic glass, which starts out as a liquid and is then formed into a strong plastic. Due to its durability, flexibility and sustainability, acrylic is one of the best substitutes for glass. The resulting effect is excellent optical clarity and transparency, creating warm light as the material can transmit up to 92% visible light. The cylindrical glass shades are encircled by wide black metal rings that block the light in the middle to keep it atmospheric. However, since the rings’ inside is not lacquered black, the light doesn’t get absorbed, instead, it glows from behind the rings. Like the metal rings, the shades are secured to the narrow backplates by brass rods that create a modern, airy look.

These French wall lamps are statement pieces that draw the eye despite their relative simplicity. While the three main materials dictate the look, much attention was paid to their quality and to the craftsmanship that united them into the modern, unique look.
