Pair of Louis XV Rococo style gilt bronze wall sconces
French, late 19th Century
Height 77cm, width 44cm, depth 24cm
The two wall lights in this pair are crafted from gilt bronze in the Rococo style of Louis XV. Each light features a sinuously formed backplate modelled as a spray of acanthus leaves, which supports three foliate candle branches, each moulded with grasping acanthus leaves. Each branch terminates in a gilt bronze candle holder and drip pan. The maker, Maison Mottheau, was famed in the nineteenth century for the quality of its productions, winning awards at several Exhibitions Universelle. Both pieces are stamped for 'Mottheau / Paris.'
