Description
Chandelier, made of plastic bottle waste. An upcycling project 'par excellance'. The piece appears like a crystal chandelier and is a sparkling reminder that TRASH IS LUXURY, indeed, and that plastic waste has to be avoided at all cost. The artist has been producing his handcrafted statement pieces for over 10 years. They carry especially now - with the important anti-plastic wave - an important message. Additionally and very importantly his work is also a social project as the artist employs marginalised people and trash-pickers from the streets of Mexico City and has transformed their lives to the better. His chandeliers are with major private collectors in the US, have been shown in a range of exhibitions (e.g. Museum of Art and Design - MAD, New York City, 2014 / ‘Beauty Show’ by Stefan Sagmeister and Jessica Walsh - Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna, 2018/19 / ‘Neo-Barocco’- at Museo Franz Maier, Mexico City, 2019), and have been featured in high calibre press internationally.
Jeannot (b. 1963 in France, lives and works in México City) focuses on generating high added value to recycled materials, working with traditional techniques & crafts-people. In the 1980s with Thierry Mugler in Paris, he began working with unconventional materials questioning customary symbols of luxury and our preconceptions of the value of materials. He orients his work toward paradox and contrast, transforming what might be seen as a plague into sophisticated designs - PET bottles, tossed in the trash - are transfigured into one-of-a-kind chandeliers, appearing like crystal. The pieces are constructed from hundreds of plastic bottles meticulously selected, cut and reassembled as an exceptional object. -
