Tamburo Floor Lamp in Lacquered Metal by Tobia Scarpa for Flos, Italy 1970s

Sold Sold
  • Description
Tobia Scarpa is an almost mythical figure in the world of design. He has been responsible for a wide range of design objects that he designed albeit often together with his wife Arfa. The vast majority of those designs are recorded in the annals of Italian design history. It is therefore almost inevitable that Italian lighting manufacturer Flos has called on the genius Scarpa several times throughout his career. DesignThis lamp called Tamburo is a typical example of his extraordinary class and avant-garde vision. Tamburo or drum in Italian refers to the round abstract shape of the lamp and it is positioned at an angle of sixty degrees on the so-called stem. On both sides a green ring is fixed to the green frame with allen bolts. The result is futuristic but also fits in very well with the Memphis aesthetic. Bold and challenging the status quo. There is a plastic matted hood on the front that is held in place by the dark green ring. The glass covers the shutters at the back of the lamp. Both the plastic cover and the glass with the shutters behind it can be exchanged. The triangular “stem” or base is attached to a metal frame with three bolts and is attached to a stone base. Given the Tamburo's original function as garden lighting, this base is necessary to ensure stability. We see the Flos logo on the beautiful neck of the lamp. Its extraordinary design and the original green paint with the dark green rings elevate this lamp to the qualities of a conversation piece. ConditionThe condition of this item is good, with natural signs of wear that one would expect from an object of this age. Scratches and color differences are part of this.
