Grashopper Floor Lamp ‘6320’ by Wim Rietveld for Gispen - 1950s
-
Description
This very rare and important post-war adjustable floor lamp, model ‘6320,’ was designed by Dutch designer Wim Rietveld for Gispen in 1953. Produced only for a few years, its production ceased when Gispen’s Panama lamp gained greater commercial success.
The lamp’s asymmetrical, insect-like base and its vibrant color scheme exemplify the optimism and ingenuity of modern 1950s design. Despite being over 60 years old, it retains a strikingly timeless quality. Key design details include a finely engineered adjustable arm, an aluminum shade, a concealed wiring system, a heavy metal base for stability, and a robust floor switch.
Gispen, founded in 1916 by Willem Hendrik Gispen, was renowned for producing innovative steel furniture. Throughout the mid-20th century, the company collaborated with prominent designers like Gerrit Rietveld, Wim Rietveld, and André Cordemeyer, cementing its legacy in industrial modernism.
A rare investment piece, this lamp is a true collector's item, ideal for modernist interiors and a testament to the enduring appeal of mid-century design. -
