French 18th Century Louis XVI Gilt & Painted Trumeau
-
Description
An eyecatching French trumeau style mirror, Louis XVI period (18th century). The painted and giltwood frame has an ornate crest at the top with seemingly disparate imagery such as a hat with ostrich feathers, a laurel wreath, and flowering vines that scroll around the pediment, blending with the upper corners of the frame. Surrounded with a beaded edge, the original mirror plate shows a curious pattern of foxing, and some loss of foil. A lovely craquelure texture enhances the red bole beneath the gilt molding, extending to the wooden back, painted light French gray (also well patinated). At the bottom of the mirror, two wide feet appearing as inverted artichoke finials elevate and protect the frame. Strung with picture wire on the wire, ready to hang in your interior.
