French 19th Century Painted Trumeau Mirror
-
Description
This romantic trumeau is a lovely combination of a piece that is both architectural and artistic. An oil-on-canvas painting in the top depicts an imaginative landscape of ancient ruins and humble dwellings on the banks of a river, captured in organic tones of forest green and burnt sienna. To the lower left one observes a finely dressed lady playing a type of string instrument for her beau, leaning toward her with keen interest. A craquelure texture in the paint and some loss (including a tear) partially obscures full appreciation of the landscape. The original mirror plate–sparkling with a few crystals and spotty foxing–is surrounded by carved molding that is coordinating but not identical to the artwork above. Please view the detailed images for a closer look at this transportive mirror.
