French 19th Gilt Mantel Mirror with Gryphons
-
Description
A dazzling French gold gilt mirror carved in the 19th century, packed with sculptural detail using elements of Rococo and Empire themes yet distinctly original. Mounted on the curved upper edges of the enormous frame–like epaulets on a shoulder–are two fierce gryphons carved with thoughtful detail–their wings morphing into acanthus as an articulation of the foliate motifs in the mirror frame. Distinct sections of molding alternate between intricate floral garlands, smooth routed edges, and classic architectural patterns. Coiled acanthus at the base unfurl toward the top, mirroring the top carvings in harmonious balance of scale. The original mirror plate is in good condition with spots of foxing across the surface and some loss of the foil in the bottom right. Please view all the detailed images.
