French Antique Sunburst Gilded Mirror
-
Description
A small beautifully carved antique early 20th-Century French gilt wood and gesso sunburst mirror. The shape is carved from one piece of wood with applied circular mirrored glass set in gesso gilded with 22K gold leaf. A wonderful design of varying sized circular cut pieces of mirrored glass. Elegant with handmade quality. The edges of the gesso so smooth allowing the gilded covering to be seamless without transition, fluid, as if dipped in liquid gold. A beautiful example nice addition to any collection or to stand alone as a statement piece. The patina to the gold leaf has a darkened bronzed hue to its color which speaks to its age. Even of its small size this mirror has a significant presence somewhat ecclesiastic in style. This design is not common and suggests the period to be early 20th century, acquired in Paris France. In good condition, patination to the gilding, ware to surface, mirrored glass is old and has patination showing through, one small semi-circle has hairline crack.
