Description
Milanese Period Carved and Gilded Wall Mirror, Italy, circa 1750
An exuberantly hand-carved and gilded Milanese wall mirror; the craftsmanship and execution of the highest skill with exceptional ornamental design including asymmetry, scrolling curves, and hand-carved wood gilding which creates a sense of surprise and the illusion of motion and drama. With an extravagant carved shell surmounting the crest and trails of bouquets of flowers flanking the center and extending down to the dramatic masquerone crowning the central base. These fantastical motifs create a highly theatrical presentation designed to impress and awe at first sight which was the intention of the artisans of the period.
