    Probably Spain, Circa 1780.

Primary Materials: Marble, Tin, Gilt Red Pine

Reference: The name “bilbao” (sometimes referred to as bilboa) is taken from the port in northwestern Spain, near the French border, which was frequented by American merchant ships in the eighteenth century.

Please see Herbert Schiffer The Mirror Book, page 479, number 481, and Helen Comstock The Looking Glass in America 1700-1825, page 80, number 52, for a very similar example at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Please also see American Antiques from the Israel Sack Collection, Vol. IV, P3716, for a similar one with a painted oval panel.

Provenance: Charles Woolsey Lyon, sold October 1922.
