Carved Mahogany Tester Bed in the Style of Anthony Quervelle
-
Description
The tester top rails supported on four elaborately carved posts with a highly carved, shaped and paneled headboard, raised on turned, tapering legs, terminating in massive brass cup casters.
H: 95" L: 91" W: 70½" (mattress: 80" x 70")
Condition: Excellent; Re-polished with shellac in the manner of the period. It retains its original brass cup-casters.
Although this Classical bed has the characteristics that have become associated with the work of Anthony Quervelle, he was so influential in Philadelphia cabinetmaking that current scholarship has yet to allow us to distinguish his un-marked work from that of his many talented competitors in Philadelphia. It is a masterwork, in any case, distinguished by very rare width (almost King size!), and spectacular matched carving on all four posts. -
