19th c. Swedish Rococo Settee or Sofa Bench in Original Paint
-
Description
A richly carved, 19th century Swedish sofa bench in the Rococo style. A rare piece found in northern Sweden. This beautiful settee has been hand-scraped back to reveal the original paint. There are intricately carved Rococo details: Flowing curves, cabriole legs, and shell motif.
The Rococo period followed the Baroque period and is often described as the final expression of the Baroque movement. The period began in the 1720's and continued through 1770. Rococo takes its name from the French word 'rocaille,' which means rock or broken shell. This period was characterized by elaborately carved, smaller and more functional pieces, the cabriole leg, and cherub, fruit, shell, flower, and scroll motifs.
