Description
A FINE QUALITY PAIR OF EARLY GEORGIAN BALL AND CLAW ‘HONDURAS’ MAHOGANY STOOLS
English. Circa 1725.
Measurements
Height: 17" (43 cm); Width 22 1/2" (57.2 cm); Depth: 17 1/2" (44.5 cm).
Research
Of solid Honduras mahogany. Each with a drop-in green leather seat resting upon a plain frieze from which issue four ball and claw cabriole legs.
These high quality stools are notable in that they are of a model more associated with the last phase of the age of walnut and they are, therefore, an early example of the use of mahogany as a preferred prestige wood in England. The mahogany used here is of the dense slow growth type from the first stage of the fashion for this prized exotic timber.
The powerful, well drawn ball and claw cabriole legs with carved shell to the knees is much associated with the seat furniture of the famed early eighteenth century furniture maker and lacquerist, Giles Grendey (1693–1780). -
