Alvar Aalto Pair of Sheepskin Paded Cantilever Armchairs Model 402, Artek 1950s
-
Description
A beautiful pair of mid-century Alvar Aalto cantilever 'spring' chairs model 402, also known as Pikkupaimio (small paimio) associated with the legendary Paimio Sanatorium designed by Aalto.
The chairs are light-weight and can be situated practically in any room or interior, and are easily moved around due to their liteness, both in weight and in appearance. The chairs have beautiful patina and are reupholstered in white sheepskin. The combo of white sheepskin and honey coloured patinated birch proved to be astonishingly beautiful as is evident from the pictures. One of the legs on the other chair is a little bit bent, but it's nothing to worry about as it is common in older chairs like these and barely noticable (refer to pictures).
Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is a world famous architect and designer. He was well known for designing his own line of furniture and lighting for the numerous buildings that he designed worldwide. The entry for him on the Museum of Modern Art website notes his "remarkable synthesis of romantic and pragmatic ideas". Aalto is also one of the founders of the global design furniture company “Artek”.
