Mid-Century Modern Armchairs in Iron & Woven Cotton Fiber, Carlo Hauner, Brazil
-
Description
Available today, this Brazilian Modern armchair set in steel & hand woven cotton fiber designed by Carlo Hauner in the fifties is a masterpiece of Craft and design!
This gorgeous pair features a steel structure painted in white and a body hand woven in a cotton fiber called “Sinzal”. The intricate pattern is nothing less than spectacular and goes not only through the armchairs but also through the steel arms giving the impression everything is one piece.
The restoration of the set took a few months because the original “Sinzal” was in an appalling state and couldn't be rescued (image attached). The natural next step was to find the closest natural fiber and an artisan that could weave using the same technique Hauner used back in the fifties. So we found Marcelo, the super pro artisan with more than 30 years doing this kind of job (caning, straw, Sinzal, etc). After two long months, Marcelo managed to bring the piece alive in the beautiful way it shows in the images
The set is paired with an outdoor steel coffee table and looks awesome. These Brazilian Modern beauties can be used in the house or outdoors and both will look awesome. A set like this could effortlessly flex into any Mid-Century Modern, modern, Contemporary environment.
This iconic design has been countlessly photographed in vintage and contemporary publications. Attached images showcasing this timeless beauty. We can share more publications upon request.
Carlo Hauner (1927-1997) with Martin Eisler (1913-1977) were the primary designers for the iconic Brazilian furniture company Forma. They are most known for well-shaped armchairs made in iron, but the production is far more complex, handcrafted, and extensive. The wood pieces produced by Forma Móveis e Objetos de Arte during 1950 & 1960s in Brazil are highly designed and well-executed.
Their narrative spans four countries (Italy, Austria, Brazil, and Argentina) and several decades and their exceptional works are already highly sought-after examples of the vibrant modern design movement in Latin America.
