Danish Cabinetmaker Wingback Chair with Beech Frame, Denmark ca 1950s
-
Description
From Denmark's variegated matrix of traditions, there emerged a multifaceted design philosophy that became a major international influence during the 20th century. The country was most successful in imparting a modern aesthetic to its traditional craft industries, resulting in pieces such as this stunning wingback chair.
Natural resources encouraged strong craft traditions and artisanal production by so-called cabinetmakers, highly trained, renowned craftsmen. From the welcoming winged body and the exposed beech wood to the stylish upholstery, this chair expresses a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment. The distinctive shape is a result of the two “ears” that encompass the sitter on the sides continuing to form the arms as well. This flowing impression is balanced by the straighter lower part with a rectangular shape and tapered legs. The main decorative element is the beech wood frame that frames the upholstered body uniquely. Both from the back and the sides, the frame engages with the body in a visually interesting way: the exposed lines accentuate the curves as well and praise the prowess of the cabinetmaker. The lush upholstery has an equally captivating look and injects the design with modern elegance.
Denmark has a long history of furniture-making. Through the 19th and 20th century, the country had a very strong tradition of cabinetmaking, producing traditional furniture by hand. In the early 20th century, these cabinetmaking traditions began to merge with modern forces to produce unique designs like this chair, with an unchanged level of quality and timelessness.
