English Fruitwood Comb Back Windsor Chair
-
Description
Unusual English early 19th Century fruitwood Windsor comb back armchair, the simple crest over seven flared spindles, the lower comb over curved arms supported by curved spindles over deeply saddled single plank seat, over finely turned legs joined by similarly fine turned "H" stretcher, the whole possessing good rich color and patination.
Although this chair is unlike any other we have seen, it bears many similarities to the East Anglian chairs made in Mendlesham primarily by the Day family of Windsor chair makers. The use of fruitwood throughout, the crisp and graceful turned legs and even the shaping of the seat point to a possible connection. We would be grateful for anyone with more information or theories on this possibly unique chair. -
