With his recent series, Fabien Dubrunfaut takes his drawings from concept to completion, with a special focus on seating. Dubrunfaut’s furniture is made from carefully selected American hardwoods, featuring strong and precise exposed joinery. His work is sculptural and exceptionally comfortable.
"What I have to say:
The next step in my quest to re-define what I call: ""the chair to fall asleep in"", after the incorporation of a simple, visual, handmade mechanism for a comfortable head-rest, was to be the addition of a simple, handmade system for a retractable leg rest. Space constraints for the future occupant, or just another unnecessary but welcome challenge for myself?
In any case, I didn't want to rely on the existing bulky hardware of the Lazy Boy type.
A push on the armrests (the visual articulation of my armchairs) swings out the leg rest from under its hiding place. Gravity, and the exposed mechanism supporting the back of the chair, are the engines of this modern miracle.
My latest declination of this quest is the ""Swivot"" chair. It adds a reclining option, as the headrest/back rail/back assembly pivots on the base rail.
The sheave-and-track system is exposed, revealing its simplicity.
Good books/movies/beverages are not included but encouraged."
