French Elm Wood Lounge Chairs by Maison Regain, France 1970s
-
Description
As with the UK and much of Europe, there was something of a design renaissance in France in the decades following the Second World War, due to developments in materials and technology. In France, designers were often also architects, whose focus on functionality and quality resulted in sculptural models, such as these lounge chairs.
The solid elm wood structures immediately stand out, their vertical and horizontal lines are cleverly combined to create the unique look. The frames showcase the exceptional level of woodworking with seamless joinery techniques and a structural composition that assumes architectural knowledge as well. From the spindles forming the back to the arms, to the sturdy legs and their stretchers, these lounge chairs show clear evidence that they are the products of a highly skilled craftsman. With the exception of the four stretchers connecting the legs, the frames have rounded edges and subtly curved elements such as the armrests and the headrests. Since the chairs are composed of several individual parts, they exude an airy look despite their solid elm bodies. Elm wood is very durable thanks to its interlocked grain that also gives it a visually stunning look. The design is further elevated by the newly upholstered back and seat cushions with a stylish bouclé fabric with a rich texture. The back cushions have a round shape so that besides complementing the overall impression of the lounge chairs, they also allow the decorative backs to stay visible.
In France, the 1970s saw brilliant designers and architects working to create furniture of the highest quality that explored modern shapes and forms. This pair of sculptural lounge chairs shows how successful these experiments were. Their sleek lines and curved contours are a testament to the mastery of form and function that defined the French design movement of the time.
