French Sculpted Oak and Paper Cord Armchairs, France 1970s

  • Description
This pair of classic armchairs stands as evidence why many French designers looked back to organic forms during the 1970s. While many early 1970s furniture designs took cues from the Art Deco shapes and forms, a more understated style also became desired bringing back traditional craftsmanship and natural materials.

Many recent interior design trends are inspired by the 1970s, however the decade’s more understated, organic side is less known. Today, we easily confuse 1970s design with general nostalgia. In reality, the ’70s were, in a way, quite restrained in palette and material usage, with lots of warm tones, natural and raw materials like wood. These armchairs show these qualities perfectly, with an aesthetic that is defined by the expertly woven paper cord panels and the sculpted details on the arms and front legs. The backs and seats showcase the diagonal cross pattern commonly referred to as the “rush weave”. Not only is this technique outstandingly sturdy, it is beautiful as well, especially paired with the oaken frames. It also counters the sculpted, historic looking parts with its raw, organic rusticity. This pair is much more straightforward in construction and less pompous in nature than its forbearers, with clean, visible joinery and precise woodworking. Besides the carvings, the armrests have a pronounced curve to accommodate the sitter. While there are numerous forms of decoration, the chairs retain their clean, clutter-free look. The design is just as driven by quality and functionality as it is by its look, evidenced by the stretchers and bent back legs that both serve structural stability.

The precision of the structures and the cord weaving is evident at first glance, showing great geometric order. These armchairs have equally arresting solid oak structures that show great craftsmanship, and make them beautiful heirloom pieces.
