Gerrit Rietveld Church Pew
-
Description
This bench originates from the church De Hoeksteen ('the cornerstone') in Uithoorn, the Netherlands. Designed by Gerrit Rietveld In the early 1960s. This would be Rietveld's only church and his last design.
Apart from the building itself, Rietveld also designed the church pews, in the same minimalist manner. The prototype for the benches was ready shortly before Rietveld died in 1964. This edition is very rare as it was used for the back row and therefore, unlike the other pews, doesn't have the bible holders at the backside. The wood and metal, in the typical grayish blue tone, shows some wear that is consistent with the age and use, as per the pictures provided. The construction is in an excellent condition. -
