Description
Rare Hans J. Wegner Settee For Johannes Hansen, Model JH 555, with slanted upholstered seat and back, on teak base, reupholstered with a beautiful rich green wool. Branded manufacturer's stamp with monogram on the underside, with original metal tag.
Wegner conceived of this settee in 1949 when he was preparing for the Annual Exhibition of the Cabinetmakers’ Guild in Denmark. He designed three chairs and this settee for the show. A molded plywood chair that was never produced, this settee, and the now world-famous Round Chair.
He designed this Settee with the idea of "doing away with the overstuffed sofas of the time period". He came up with this armless settee that exhibits effortlessly the ethos of organic modernism with its clean lines and elegant front and back struts.
