"Razorblade" Dining Chairs by Henning Kjærnulf (attr.), Denmark ca 1970s

$ 7,315
  • Description
    This rare set bears the unmistakeable oak structures created Danish designer and craftsman, Henning Kjaernulf with the distinctive “razorblade” backs. This set was manufactured by the Danish company, Nyrup Møbelfabrik during the 1970s and has an elemental, brutalist look from a mature era of Scandinavian design.

    It is easy to see where the nickname of these chairs stem from. The slightly curved backrests have decorative razorblade-shaped cutouts, an unparalleled design feature. The chairs are visually stimulating, featuring both angular and rounded shapes. The scalloped pattern is mirrored in the seats as well, tying in the rest of the structures to the backs. The style and shape of the seats and legs have a much more pared down look that relies on the natural beauty of the oak. The backs have a unique, arched shape formed by the elongated back legs that near each other towards the top. Thanks to the seamless joinery, there are no visible screws, making the chairs effortlessly elegant. While the high level of craftsmanship is evident from afar as well, the smaller details become evident upon closer inspection. The carefully sculpted seats, the hand carved backs accommodating the backrests, and the scalloped details all speak tales of Danish craftsmanship and its preference for high quality woods with stunning natural qualities.

    With a commitment to combine tradition and modernity, this rare set is a timeless classic composed of heirloom pieces from Henning Kjærnulf’s more mature design era that is more streamlined without the Baroque-like features. The chairs’ features are greatly enhanced when they are put together, and thanks to the hand carved details, no two of the six chairs are perfectly identical, making this a truly unique dining set.
