Swoop Plywood Lounge Chairs by Brian Kane for Herman Miller
-
Description
Brian Kane's Swoop Collection for Herman Miller embodies a modern interpretation of midcentury style, particularly showcased through the Swoop Plywood Lounge Chair. Kane meticulously studied the interaction between people and public seating, noting how users contort themselves into often uncomfortable and nonfunctional furniture. His aim was to create a collection that genuinely accommodated the natural human form and its spontaneous behaviors.
The Swoop Plywood Lounge Chair is a tribute to Herman Miller’s esteemed legacy, deeply influenced by the groundbreaking work of Charles and Ray Eames. Renowned for their pioneering use of molded plywood, the Eameses delivered furniture designs that have become timeless icons. Kane has adeptly modernized this motif, incorporating elegant upholstered "Swoops" that embrace the body in any chosen posture. This chair is designed to accommodate various sitting positions—whether upright, angled, or reclined—ensuring comfort and support in every scenario.
We have four of the shown Swoop Plywood Lounge Chairs, all in their original condition. Each chair’s shell is a handsome showcase of Ashwood Veneer, exhibiting a subtle yet distinct grain. The chairs also retain their original Herman Miller fabric in a brilliant blue. Brian Kane’s chair is a pleasure to look at from every angle, making each chair easily adaptable to a multitude of well-appointed interiors. These are excellent examples of Kane’s design, as they are all in very good original condition. -

Stories exist in many forms, we see them in objects. The aesthetic of those before us is passed down through their surviving creations. These are the objects we search for; to preserve, refine, & continue the story. Object Refinery combines design obsession, fine craftsmanship, and a love for history in our worldwide search for objects. Based in Connecticut, USA; we partner with a network of local artisans to restore and refine our findings before passing them on to the next collector.
