Early Edition 'Gomma' Chair by De Pas, D'Urbino e Lomazzi for BBB Emmebonacina
-
Description
This early edition GOMMA chair by BBB Emmebonacina is a stunning embodiment of 1970s Italian design, exuding a unique blend of playful form and functional comfort. This particular piece, preserved in its original fabric, is a true collector's item, capturing the avant-garde spirit of the era.
Designer trio 'Jonathan De Pas, Donato D’Urbino, and Paolo Lomazzi' came together in the early 1960s. They were part of a wave of young designers who sought to challenge traditional design norms and explore new materials, forms, and functions. Their approach was often characterized by playful creativity, a keen interest in contemporary culture, and an emphasis on innovation. They quickly gained attention for their ability to combine pop art influences with industrial production techniques.
Design
Designed in 1967, the Gomma chair was made from polyurethane foam, a material that was relatively new to furniture design at the time. The use of polyurethane foam allowed for a sculptural, organic form that was both comfortable and visually striking. The name "Gomma," which means "rubber" in Italian, reflects the chair's soft, pliable nature.
The Gomma chair was part of a broader exploration by De Pas, D'Urbino e Lomazzi of new materials and production techniques that could break away from the rigid, structured designs of traditional furniture. The chair’s design was minimalistic yet expressive, embodying the designers' interest in creating pieces that were as much about art as they were about function.
The chair has sculptural curves that are reminiscent of organic forms, creating a cozy cocoon-like seat that invites relaxation. The deep, earthy hue of the upholstery adds warmth and elegance, making it a versatile statement piece for any modern interior. With its bold, yet inviting design, the GOMMA chair is not just a piece of furniture, but a work of art that pays homage to the innovative spirit of Italian craftsmanship.
Condition
The chair is in very good condition, however the original fabric has two small ‘holes’ in there. Upon request, this chair can be re-upholstered.
Due to the fact that this is signed with ‘Emmebonancina’ we know this chair is made between 1967 and 1973, when they changed the name to the more simple ‘Bonancina’ -
