Jorge Zalszupin Brazilian Daybed - 1960s
-
Description
Daybed by Polish-Brazilian designer Jorge Zalszupin, made in the 1960s. Jorge Zalszupin daybed shows a solid construction of straight lines and features an elastic braided structure to support the mattress. The minimalistic approach gives this piece a peaceful yet strong expression. The mattress is upholstered with high-quality off-white fabric, which looks great in contrast with the wooden frame featuring a warm colour and patina. This design is characterized by a minimal, clean approach that seeks to combine functionality with beauty. This Brazilian daybed is in excellent condition and would be a great addition to each mid-century modern interior.
Jorge Zalszupin (1922 - 2020) was a Polish-Brazilian architect and designer noted for modern design. He was born in Warsaw, Poland. In the 1950s Zalszupin founded L'Atelier, a furniture design manufacturer in Sao Paulo, Brazil. When he moved to Brazil, he worked with Oscar Niemeyer to design furniture for the new capital, Brasília. In the late 1950s, Jorge Zalszupin started his own furniture company L’Atelier, which would become one of the most important furniture companies in Brazil. Jorge’s furniture company started as a small workshop with a team of highly skilled craftsmen. L’Atelier soon turned into a growing company with 300 employees at the end of the 1960s. Pioneering use of plywood and chromed metal became the signature of L’Atelier furniture and enabled Zalszupin to create sensual and elegant pieces that stand as timeless signatures of the Brazilian modernist movement.
