Description
This rare and striking set, crafted by Brazilian designer José Zanine Caldas in the 1970s, features two sculptural lounge chairs and a stunning coffee table made from richly grained tropical wood. The lounge chairs are defined by their curvilinear, monolithic form, exuding a sense of organic minimalism while remaining supremely functional and inviting. The coffee table, signed by the designer, boasts a natural live edge and raw texture, showcasing the beauty and imperfections of solid wood.
José Zanine Caldas (1919–2001) was a visionary Brazilian architect and designer, known for his profound respect for the natural world and his innovative use of reclaimed and tropical woods. Often referred to as the “architect of the people,” Zanine’s work bridged the divide between high design and vernacular traditions, reflecting his roots in Bahia and his passion for sustainable practices. His creations, which blend sculptural artistry with functionality, have become icons of Brazilian modernist design. This set is a testament to his philosophy of working with the soul of the material, creating timeless pieces that celebrate both nature and craft.
