Mid-Century Lounge Chair and Footstool with Tubular Steel Legs, Europe ca 1950s

Sold Sold
  • Description
This imposing set is a visually stunning representation of European modern design. The well-thought-out minimalism of this lounge chair and footstool expresses a stylishness that is uninfluenced by the passing of time.

The set owes much of its genius to the simple, sweeping structure with an open, fully upholstered body that enables the ultimate lounging experience, whether it is sitting upright or slouching. The chair offers a comforting sense of cosiness that is derived from the organic shape of the body rather than its cushioning. The general aesthetic of both pieces is defined by the thin, tubular steel legs that contrast with the softness of the warm yellow fabric. Rather than clashing, the materials complement each other in a way that creates the inherently modern look. It is widely accepted that Marcel Breuer's 1920s Wassily Chair was the first chair design to use tubular steel to form its frame. Since then, the material became much more widespread but was still less used before the mid-century modern movement. The adventurous designers of the era experimented with new material combinations and shapes, resulting in unique pieces such as this set. At the same time, functionality was always considered, therefore the thick seats, the lounge chair’s elongated seat and reclined back all contribute to the outstanding level of comfort.

If the name is any indicator, the beloved lounge chair is designed for comfort and this model is no exception. Completed by the matching footstool, it offers the complete mid-century modern package: functionality, quality materials, and a design aesthetic that will always remain in style.
