Mid-Century Modern Striped Lowback Easy Chair, Denmark ca 1940s

$ 4,180
  • Description
    This beautiful Danish cabinetmaker easy chair recalls the peak of Danish mid-century modern design. Thanks to its curved shape, this model is exceptionally cosy and elegant. Soft curved chairs like this are statement pieces in any space, but they can also adapt to a variety of styles thanks to their universal appeal.

    Strongly influenced by the functional forms of the Bauhaus school in Germany, Danish designers led the way in furniture design during the 1940s and 1950s. They combined the inspiration brought by new industrial technologies with minimalist design. This style became so influential that it is recognized as a design movement in itself, entitled Danish Design, with a subgroup known as Danish Modern. Exemplified by this easy chair, the style focused more on the aesthetics of modernity whilst employing the exquisite techniques and material familiarity of highly skilled craftsmen known as cabinetmakers. This model is a great example with its clean and cosy lines, coupled with a delicate emphasis on proportions, materials, and the requirements of the human body.

    The stylish, striped upholstery fully covering the body immediately sets this chair apart. The fabric choice in combination with the rounded lines of the design adds just enough edge. The seat is nestled into the chair, following a smooth and unitary aesthetic. The visual appearance however is not the only thing that echoes Danish design, but also the exquisite craftsmanship under the fully upholstered body. The tapered stained wood legs add a modern, organic feel, balancing out the profile of the chair.
