This late Ming dynasty armchair is a remarkable example of traditional Chinese seating, where each type of chair adapted its conformist characteristics based on its intended use. Likely classified as a "Southern Official's Armchair" (nanguan mao yi), this piece embodies several key features typical of this style. Notably, it is characterized by armrests and a backrest that gently curve downward into the vertical supports. This distinctive right-angle joint, referred to by Chinese artisans as a "pipe joint," resembles a smoking pipe, offering an impression of fluidity and smoothness.
