    Provenance: Partial descent in the Hollis French family of Wayland, Massachusetts.

    Reference: A nearly identical chair is at Winterthur and appears in both Joseph Downs, American Furniture, number 155, and in N. Evans and N. Richards, New England Furniture at Winterthur, entry 55. Other similar chairs with the same splat are at The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Yale University Art Gallery.
