Pair of Jugend Armchairs by Bernhard Häkli, Finland 1910s

$ 6,270
  • Description
    Art Nouveau is known in different languages by different names, such as “Jugendstil” (Youth Style) in German, or “Jugend” for short. Finnish architecture and design has contributed significantly to several styles internationally, such as Jugendstil (or Art Nouveau). These lovely armchairs by Bernhard Häkli serve as a perfect example of this design era.

    This set of armchairs has both an artistic and geometric form which is characteristic of the movement’s later years. The chairs also recall the ‘Arts and Crafts movement’, and the ‘Mission Style’ as they are very sturdy with quality craftsmanship, which is apparent in the joinery. At the same time, this model doesn't compromise on the aesthetics, keeping the delicate Art Nouveau details - such as the shape of the back and armrests which show beautiful handiwork. The expert woodworking of the chairs’ structures, paired with the upholstered back and seat, is also a signature characteristic of Jugendstil. The muted colours and geometric design make this set an interesting addition to contemporary living spaces. Additionally, master cabinetmakers, like Bernhard Häkli, were highly aware of body proportions, prioritising comfort just as much as the visual qualities.

    The ideal of designers of the Jugendstil was to make a house a complete work of art, with everything inside - from the furniture to the dishware - in perfect harmony.
