Pair of Moss Green Upholstered Armchairs, Europe 20th century

Sold Sold
  • Description
The 20th century represented a marked era in design, when two of the most important, iconic styles came about as a result of the World Wars. The Art Deco movement elevated the status of everyday objects - from jewellery to ceramics to furniture - through bold, geometric forms, sleek figures, and material wealth and sophistication. Mid-century modern, on the other hand, emphasised clean lines, organic shapes and modern materials to achieve functionality.

This pair of 20th century European armchairs stands at the marriage of these two timeless design traditions. The most striking aspect of these chairs is their scalloped back, which adds a touch of opulence and Art Deco-style flair. The upholstery follows the shape of five arched contours, which come together to create the curvature of the chairs’ backrest that flows down into the deep curve of the armrests. Their soft moss green fabric caters to a perfect sanctuary for relaxation, while also providing visual and tactile richness, highlighting the chairs’ curves and creating extra depth. The curvature of the back and the choice of fabric offer comfort and coziness, thus staying true to the mid-century modern belief that “form follows function”. The armchairs rest on four wooden legs, splayed outward in order to increase stability. The short wooden legs have a deep, rich tone and colour, complementing the natural hues of the upholstery.

These beautiful, inviting armchairs live up to their 20th century roots by encompassing the era’s most attractive and appreciated characteristics. With their elegant and refined, yet functional and comfortable design, these pieces command attention and offer a great seating option for modern interiors.
