Pair of Scandinavian Modern Striped Armchairs, Sweden Mid-20th Century

$ 13,300
  • Description
    The term “Swedish Modern” first emerged in the 1930s, when Swedish design was becoming increasingly well known in Europe and the United States. It reached its peak in the 1950s, characterised by many of the qualities of modernism that blended natural materials, such as wood and a Scandinavian respect for craftsmanship.

    Like its counterpart in Denmark (Danish Modernism), characteristics of Swedish Modernism included the use of light‐coloured woods, organic shapes, and colour schemes with a predominance of white offset by accents of colour, as this pair of armchairs demonstrates. The main principles of Swedish Modernism centre around minimalism, simplicity and functionalism. These armchairs manage to follow these principles while offering plenty of visually interesting qualities - for example, the gently curved arms descending into the front legs. The design of the wooden frames are effortlessly flowing and dynamic. The simple but effective shape of this pair is further supported by the light upholstery that is elegantly restrained, while having enough textural variety to enhance the curved forms. The emphasis on the welcoming and soft shape, paired with the beautiful materials, make this pair a perfect example of “Svensk design”. This expression in particular denotes a way of life, which can be traced in the openness, understated elegance, and high-quality craftsmanship of these chairs.

    Swedish design has influenced European furniture to a great degree, resulting in iconic pieces defined by minimalism, simplicity, and functionality. The muted colours and gentle designs make mid-century furniture - like this pair - an ideal addition to contemporary living spaces.
