Pair of Sri Lankan Lounge Chairs, Sri Lanka Late 20th Century
-
Description
These rare Sri Lankan wood and cane chairs recall the mid-century style of Pierre Jeanneret while being beautiful pieces on their own merit as well.
This pair is made of high-quality wood with the seat and back upholstered with the cane. The organic cane compliments the design very nicely, while the strong, geometric structure gives the pair a modern, timeless look. The overall appearance and design resemble the chairs designed by Jeanneret for the Indian city of Chandigarh in the 1950s, especially the “Kangaroo”. However, this pair features armrests that are rounded and form a continuous line with the front legs. The seat is elevated, following the line of the back legs. Throughout the frame, there are visible screws that add to the “raw” yet carefully crafted aesthetic of these chairs.
Additionally, the pair has many little details: beautifully rounded corners and curved beams and the particular cane weaving technique. During the 1950s, Sri Lanka saw the appearance of furniture in teak and other woods combined with cane upholstery, a clear inspiration for this pair. ~H.
