The AP Lounge Chair was designed by Aditya Prakash, a late Indian modernist architect who worked at the Chandigarh Capital Office alongside Pierre Jeanneret and others designing furniture for the Chandigarh project in the 1950s. It is a chair design studied and re-editioned as a tribute to the late Indian modernist architect's forays into furniture making. Phantom Hands has developed two earlier designs in collaboration with his son and eminent architectural historian Vikramaditya Prakash, upgrading them structurally and materially, but carefully holding onto their aesthetic legacy. The final result is furniture that is both historically rooted and staunchly contemporary.
Aditya Prakash created the original versions of these lounge chairs for his own home. The chairs were designed with comfortable broad armrests, a feature that is also seen on the audience chairs designed by him for the iconic Tagore Theatre in Chandigarh. With its cross legs, slanted back, and cane seating, the AP Lounge Chair is also reminiscent of the distinctive Cross Legged Lounge Chair that was used in several public building lobbies in Chandigarh.
Phantom Hands’ sturdier, ergonomically enhanced version is a result of a rigorous prototyping process which introduced small, meticulous modifications. Aside from the use of premium quality teak, cane and weaving techniques, these tweaks involved minor alterations in dimensions and incline for enhanced stability. Seat and back cushions in a choice of handspun cotton or raw silk fabrics were specifically designed for the chair to add to the seating comfort.
