RARE HEPPLEWHITE SIDE CHAIR
-
Description
New York, ca. 1785-1800
Mahogany, birch and ash rails (seat frame)
The design and execution of this chair are of the finest quality and exhibit the distinct features found on New York chairs. The crisp detailed carving of the drapery swags and central plum on the splat is framed in a shield-back. The delicate flared out tapered legs are embellished with overlapping husk inlay patterns and highlighted with fine line inlay terminating into the cuffs. The style on inlay is also characteristic of pieces found in New York.
For an identical example and perhaps from the same set of chairs see, “American Furniture from the Kaufman Collection”, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., J. Michael Flanigan, plate 39, pg. 116.
